The Biltmore Estate

A Great American Haunting: The Biltmore Estate

Million's on top of million's have witnessed the beauty and majesty of the Biltmore Estate nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC. From the gardens in the Summer to the Christmas decorations in the Winter. Everything about this home is impressive.

All of those things are almost as impressive as the events that seem to have taken place there. Rumors of haunting's and paranormal activities have occurred on the grounds ever since its owner, George Washington Vanderbilt passed on to the other side in 1914 due to complications from surgery.

It's been recorded that his widow, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt, carried many conversations with her deceased husband over the years. Edith passed away in 1958. It is said that's when a lot of the strange events began to happen. Employees began to hear laughing, talking, footsteps, and would see George Vanderbilt in the library, as well as Edith.

In 2004, the last time that I went to the Estate, I actually got to speak with an employee that worked in the home, usually after hours trying to tidy everything up for the next day.

The employee, who asked to remain nameless, stated that she's seen and heard a lot of things in the home and after seeing and hearing Edith Vanderbilt crying in one of the bedrooms, she won't go past the second floor by herself anymore. "That's the first time I've ever seen anything like that before and it had to be here."

Many of the tourist's have mentioned that they would feel like the paintings eye's would be following them and watching every step that they took. A young boy, on a field trip from a local school said that he saw a headless cat walking around. Odd thing to see, but according to several locals, the boy wasn't the first to see a headless, orange cat wandering around the premises.

My cousin got me in touch with a local construction worker, whom I'll only refer to by his first name Edward, said that he worked on some minor renovations on the cottage on the grounds in 2007. He said, "Every step I took inside that place, I felt like I was being followed. I caught a cool breeze flowing through the cottage in a light whisper and a smell of a strong cologne. It gave me cold chills, but the slight sense of an uneasy feeling blew away with the breeze."

Could Edward have felt the presence of George Vanderbilt? Or was it the spirit of a past worker approving of his work?

I've only been able to speak to a couple of people that had paranormal experiences inside the home or on its property, but I've heard hundreds of stories from people saying that they know people who felt or seen things.

The last time that I visited the property, tourist's weren't allowed to take pictures on the inside of the house. Tour guides and employees say that it's because the flash could damage the old paintings and such. Not that I believe that.

One local resident said that his brother-in-law was on a group tour and wandered away from the tour and decided to visit a few area's of the house that was forbidden to the public. Stating they were personal rooms kept blocked off out of privacy of the family. His brother-in-law said he encountered something on the third floor and the ghost seemed to be pacing in front of one of the windows. He was apprehended and barred from the house. He stated that he got a photograph of the spirit, but refused to let me see it.

I have personally seen photograph's of apparitions from the stable area and out in the garden towards the late evening, but can't tell if they're doctored or not.

The wife and I will be staying in the cottage later next year, hopefully I can get more information and some physical evidence of the haunting's and update this story.

At this moment, I have been denied comment to verify this from other employees, by phone. All five people that I've talked to state the same thing, "We are unaware of anything like that going on." As well as a couple that replied via email. Stating the same line as above.

Is something going on deep inside the walls of this home or is it just legend?

Stay patiently tuned as I attempt to uncover the mystery and experience these claims myself.

I appreciate that you took time to post your artical. I have always been intriged by the Biltmore Estate. I am also very curious about ghost and such, so I will be anxiously awaiting more details of your investigations.

My husband and I visited the Biltmore Estate on February 18th, 2009. I personally have visited the Biltmore on many occasions and never had anything happen or seen anything. On the 18th of Frebruary my husband and I went to the 3rd floor, where the servant bedrooms where located. It was such a weird feeling, the temperature in the hallway was very comfortable, but as soon as we stepped near the doorway of one of the servants, we both felt the temperature change. It was freezing cold in that bedroom. It felt weird, like someone was satnding right there by the door way.

After that event I decided to see if there had been any reportings of ghost in the Biltmore Estate. I am very interested in finding out more.

Please come back with more info, unless you're caught in action by a Ghost ( I mean host) lol. But seriously, evidence is a strong virtue.

ashley 2 years ago

to follow along with the evidence thing. i was going to see if i could get my friend and his crew to investigate the biltmore, but it seems to me(by your acount) that the employees of the biltmore do not want one to be done, or to even belive that something outa this world is happing.

I am like a little detective myself. I am moving on over to the biltmore house case after I uncover my school. I managed many before. But since it is summer, it is very hard to uncover the mystery. In the biltmore house we were in the most cutest room! I said to my sister, "This looks like a little girl's room." After everyone left, I was lokinng around. And I could've swear I saw a little girl sitting on the edge of her bed with a doll in her lap staring at me. I thought I was seeing things. She had a big hat with lace on it, a little white and pink poofy dress on. She had black hair and huge brown eyes. I could've had sworn it was the daughter of the vanderbuilts. She died in the somewhat 60's by getting sick. But why was her little girl spirit there?

Patti 2 years ago

We live near Asheville and visit the house often. We have never experienced anything but surely there is something there. I would love to hear more as we have been intrigued with the house for the 10 years we have lived here. I really do not understand the silence. The house even as wonderful as it is always seems empty even when full of visitors.

Lynn 2 years ago

i went there over the summer. it was truly an amazing property. i didn't see or feel anything of that sort, but as soon as we left my mom turned to me and said "WOW was that place haunted!" i asked here what she saw, she replied that she saw nothing but sensed repeated presences & chilling pockets of air throughout the tour. fascinating. =]

I went to the bitlmore house this labor day weekend(2009) with my mom and my twin girls they're 20 months old as we went throug the house there were some rooms in the house that we went to and as soon as we did this my babies started to cry for no reason and when we got out of this particular rooms they would stop crying but where they cry the hole time was in this room that have a little crib in it and we all sence something or someone there. it was an unpleasant feeling.

I was at the Biltmore House yesterday (Nov 10). Although I did not feel or experience anything odd while on the tour, I did notice a strange glow above the house in one of the pictures I took. It was overcast and raining, so it could not have been the Sun or a reflection. I have no idea what may have caused it, but it was strange. Here is a link to the picture.

I, too, have visited Biltmore many times. I live in the area and love to go there. I had never experienced anything odd until recently. We took a Candlelight evening tour and in the basement of the house, I almost hyperventilated. In the kitchen, laundry room and servant's dining room there was an overwhelming feeling of being watched-- almost like I was intruding on something very important and someone was angry with me. It was a panicky feeling-- one that made me feel like I needed to escape. I still get chills when I think about it. Once I was out of those particular rooms, the feeling faded. I'm curious to see if the feeling returns when I go back again.

My girl friend and I are going there on Wednesday 12/23. We can't wait. I will let you know if we feel any presence..

Cecilia Dominic 2 years ago

There is something decidedly creepy about the first two changing rooms you come to in the basement. Have felt it both times I've been there. Maybe the spirits like their privacy?

Fascinating stuff. :)

I just got back from Biltmore on 1/2/2010, this was my 3rd time in the home. I had never much thought about ghosts being there until we were walking through the music room (the one not completed until 1976) when my 3 year old son kept saying "the little girl is talking with you" which is what he always says when he is playing with little friends his age he has just met (like at a play ground). I asked him several times to make sure I was hearing him right as there were NO children around at all. After I asked him 5 times or so and he repeated what he had said he got very quiet like he was getting frustrated and embarrassed I could not see who he was speaking of. It was BEYOND weird!!!!!

I love the blitmore house, ever since i was a little kid. I have been fasinated by the achritectual features too. Unusually i have been there every summer since i was 6. Im probabaly not the only one who sees or hears weird things there. Ever since i was little i felt something was wrong with that place, every time i go back i seem to think there is even more things wrong with it, and usually little kids dont think that. Ive been in the back sences tour about 3 times and theres wayyy more than just headless cats and insane laughter. My Sister and I were on a tour together and we were walking past the servants room, i didnt see anything but the tempeture is different there than in the rest of the house, which could probably be explainable since its so big, but as we walked by the rooms i could hear screaming and crying it was awful, i will never forget that.

I have worked in Biltmore House for 3 years and have known I am psychic from a young age. There is one other person who works within the house who is a practicing psychic but keeps it under wrap from employees on the estate.

Yes, there is activity throughout the house, though a great deal of it is residual. One morning last summer I was crossing through the first floor to the front door area. No one was in the house other than the usual security folks in the breakroom and an audio attendent in the far end of the house. As I approached the Winter Garden, There was a very attractive young lady, approximaely 20-24 years, with light brown hair fixed in a loose "Gibson Girl" style. She had on a white dress that at the time was called a lingerie dress. She was standing in the morning light, casually reading a letter. The one thing I then noticed was that she was hovering about 2 feet above the floor. As quickly as I saw her, she was gone. I believe she had been a guest with an older lady during the time of 1887-1901.

There is also a spirit who will randomly say "Hello!" to various guests/staff in the house. I have heard her in the part of the house we call section 6 which is the Bachelor wing. During September a woman approached me as she came down the Grand Staircase. She started by saying "I hope you won't think I'm crazy but has anyone ever mentioned hearing a woman's voice on the 2nd floor?" The way she described the voice and inflection, it was the same one which I had heard. The interesting thing about her was she said she was listening to the audio tour at the time. The audio had stopped at the end of a room description and was waiting for her to enter the next room number. In the dead air time, while wearing the headphones she heard the hello. She said she stopped and turned around but she was the only person in the hall.

Someone had mentioned activity at the Gardners Cottege. I have spoken to 3 security staff members as well as an employee who lived there for a short time with his family when he joined the company in an upper level position. One evening he and his family were in the livingroom watching tv when an older middleaged woman walked into the kitchen and out the backdoor. The entire family saw her and later found out she was the spirit of one of managers of the truck garden which the estate ran at one time. She had been diagnosed with cancer. As the sun rose one morning, she stood on the back porch&shot herself.

BelleOfBiltmore 2 years ago

One correction to the last paragraph from my entry above: The female who killed herself at the Gardners Cottege was the wife of the manager of the truck garden.

Bre 2 years ago

My mother worked at the Biltmore Estate several years ago and she said she often encountered a strange phenomenon on one of the staircases. She would hear what sounded like something falling down the stairs and glass breaking, but there would be no one around. She eventually found out that one of George's maids had fallen down the stairs and broken her neck while carrying a tray down for one of the family's parties.

Has anyone heard a story about a Vanderbilt servant who was severely injured or died in an accident near the bachelor's wing or in the swimming pool room?

I've visited the house many times and EVERYTIME I have visited I always get physically sick. My symptoms are headache, nausea, bodyaches, extreme weakness. As soon as I get out of the house I'm fine. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Does anyone have any ideas of what it may be??

Jcat449 20 months ago

Omg. I am 11 and I'm going to the biltmore estate this summerband I'm really freaked out right now. I went ther once before when I was like 3 or 4 and I can hardly remember anything except for 2 memories. The first one is when I lead my mother to the rose garden and had no idea where I was going. I was really little at the time, so I can't remember that much, but when I lead my mother to the rose garden, I remember a chill and like a shadow hanging over me. Almost as if some one or somthing was guiding me there for a purpose. The second one is remembering sitting on a bench with my grandmother because she didn't want to walk up more stairs at her age, and I was scared because I thought I was going to plummet to my death because we were up so high. Then when I looked in to the room across from the bench there was like a nursery and I could hear a baby crying, but of all the people there were no babies and no one else seemed to be affected by it. Are these normal thing that happen to people when they're there, or is it just a weird one I encountered?

KSW 19 months ago

Eaelier this year I went to the built more house and like oh my god to this story because I'm only 8! As we walked through this room i looked up and saw these big instruments [i can't remember what they're called] and heard this slight whistiling and thought I saw an image of a ghostly pearson playing them! I felt presents of something I couldn't see up there and never really told any body. Could this be the ghost of one of the maids or somthing that lived here? Or is it just me? These things still spook me today!

KSW 19 months ago

NICKY, I'v expiereienced these things, too!

Last summer my husband who was my boyfriend at the time was PCSing from Germany to Arizona. He invited me along with him to visit his family. While in Tennessee he took me to the Biltmore where we did the standard walk thru and private. While in the basement by the big furnaces I was standing with the group in a circle around our guide. I was standing off a little, with a little more then arms reach from everyone, I kept feeling this tugging on my skirt. I didn't want to alarm anyone or look crazy so instinctively I brushed it away, it tugged again. I walked away from the group to pretend to look at the copper molding on the ground against the wall, I told it "in the name of Jesus, leave me alone!" it stopped! I didn't want to give it anymore attention so I waited to tell my husband until after we were on our way home. He said he was being bothered too! Well regardless of that, the Biltmore is where we got engaged so it has good memories!

I have only visited the biltmore once and know for a fact it is haunted. I did not experience any sightings but i could feel several presences in the house, especially on the third floor. I can also relate to the stories of the visitors claiming that it feels like the pictures are watching you, i felt the same.

I went to the biltmore estate property May of 2010. I didnt actually go in the house, but i didgo to the gift shop. I'm not psychic, but i can feel presences on a daily basis. I know where they are in the room, how old or young ect. Well I went upstairs in the gift shop area, because I was being drawn to something. On the left side comming up the stairs there is a door. By that door There is a child for some odd reason he is very happy.

Deb 17 months ago

I visited the Biltmore mansion about 4 Christmases ago. This is 2010 that would have been 2006. Well anyway, I didn't go in expecting ghosts but I have a strong pshycic and can pick up on spirits easier than most. It was the room where Mr. Vanderbilts portaint in oil is the large painting. I was looking at him in the face and his eyes were like peircing through mine as if disaproval or something. It was strange. Like he was reading me and it was very chilling. Next time I go I will go to the 3rd floor and visit and the garden area. We didn't get to go to the garden area this last time it was too late in the day. Walking to the parking lot I felt a ghost looking down from the top floor windows as we were walking to the parking lot. There is defintely spirits in that house! I will use my smart phone and take pictures next time it will pick up something too. Maybe turn the recorder on.

Ichigo and Ami 16 months ago

I went to visit the house in 2009, and while I was in the gift shop I started to feel really weird. I got really tingly, and then suddenly numb. I started to get light headed and my vision started to fade until I could see only black. I found my mom after walking around the gift shop a bit, and she took me to the courtyard to get some water. She said I looked really pale. I felt better afterwards, but when I went inside the house I got a weird feeling. I always blamed it on low blood pressure, but this year my best friend, Ichigo, talked to some professional ghost hunters and told them what happened. They said they think that something may have been trying to posses me. O.o

Now Ichigo went back this summer, and they were in the billiard room. Sh saw an apparition like a mist, and she was the only one there. She started to feel really sick afterwards, but she went to catch up with her family. Later while they were in the library Ichigo's guide saw a boom that was out of place. Ichigo asked if it happened a lot and the guide said,"Yes it does. It irritates me because I'll put it away and it'll fall back out of place." Neither of us are sure what's going on, but personally I think it's possible. When you think about it, Mr. Vanderbilt worked so hard to make this house in his life, that he may be so attached he never really left.

mollie.br. 16 months ago

I've lived in asheville for 15 years. I drive through biltmore almost every day. I've visted the biltmore estate at least 10 times and my mother even worked there for a while. While she worked there though a night security guard quit, saying he had seen a girl descending the staircase in a towel and she had vanished. Now i have never herd of this "headless orange cat" that roams around. But for my father's birthday one year though we took a rooftop tour which is kind of a behind the scenes tour of the rooms you don't usually get to see. we went up in the servants rooms and it was so cold and so small. The whole house has an outrageously eerie feel. at least every time i go there i feel it. It doesn't feel... empty. That's all. And i have always heard stories of the garden house being outrageously haunted. But i wouldn't know. I just know that every time we visit, I feel the eerie feeling that somethings still there.

My husband and I went to Biltmore house for the first time last month, mid September 2010. This was our first trip and we spent a whole week there going to Biltmore while on vacation. We went on all but one of the tours. Our first day in the house was amazing. After reading the comments on this page, I realized that my husband and I did in fact see something while in the house. We walked into the family breakfast room where the portrait paintings are of GV's family. Walking around the room felt kind of odd but a beautiful room. When my husband and I turned to look at the family portraits something very strange happened to the both of us after a few minutes in that room looking at the paintings. The painting of GV's mom when we look up at her,... Began to change right before our eyes! She glared at us, I mean she really GLARED AT US AND LOOKED MAD! As if to say, "GET OUT OF HERE" or something. Then within a split second, the painting looked normal again. I said to my husband, something isn't right, she looks so "MEAN" something must have happened to her here! He said, "I guess so" and we both never mentioned it again. Last night, I had a dream or rather nightmare and this played over in my dream. I realized that her painting was NOT the only one that did this while we were there! -- I think the house is NOT empty, family and guest spirits still live there. I feel something bad must have happened there... OR, the past family members aren't happy to know their home is now a tourist attraction!

Continued from my post above.....Another little fact my husband reminded me of. While listening to the Audio Tour devise on the second floor. Mine became stuck when I reached the second floor level landing. I located one of guides on that floor and told her what my audio devise was doing. It would get to a certain point, skip and then stop dead like it was a tape dragging. She said to me,..."the devise is digital". I said, listen for yourself then to what it's doing. She put the headset on and didn't look too good after that! She looked like she had been shot or something and truly looked frightened but, calmly said... "I'll have another one brought up for you right away". She called downstairs on her radio and they brought me another audio devise up. The employee downstairs said over the radio... "devices are digital and don't get stuck or skip". She said, "this ONE is"! They brought up a new one, looked at me rather strange when handing it to me. I put the new one on and we continued the tour. May be nothing but... I just thought this was SO STRANGE the way the employees acted!

I went to the builtmore house when I was like 8. I never heard anything in the swimming pool area. The basement was offley freezing. Like a frezzer. The servernts and maids room where shut and locked for some weird reason. I was on the 3rd or 4th floor (I don't remember) I saw this picture with a family with 2 kids (naked) there eyes followed you everywhere you go. I went to the dumwaitor it was freakishly cold when I stepped close to it. I thought I seen what was blood on it. O.O We never got those radio thingy's you wear to listen. Wondered what they were but now I know. I also seen a little girls room I thought was the cutest ever and I wish had it It. When we were ready to move on the to the next room I saw one of the closest/dresser open its doors. I also heard the toilet flush. It was creepy!!!

I had the same experiences at the Builtmore, years ago my sister and I went on the tour, we felt the same weird vibes all through the house. Eyes in the paintings were strange and creepy like they were watching us. We felt that something very bad had happened there, perhaps to some of the servents? Did anyone notice the childrens playroom , painted blood red with witches on the wall. Very odd for a playroom. I felt someone had drowned in the pool and maybe fell or been pushed off the balcony. It was the feeling of also of someone not wanting me there.

Ive only been there once..it has been awhile since I visited..I was about 16..I'm 22 now but at the time but I don't recall any paranoral activities or feeling cold...all I remember was just "awwing" at everything and following my brother lol..I do remember the rooms and the basement with all these pictures..One room was very small and I remember peeking in the room, it had a window on the door and a table in there. It had a pic of a woman and I just stared at it..I remember a couple of rooms were taped off becuase they were being remodeled..I remember the bowling alley..but the rest my visit is blurry..I'd love to go back asap and experience some of these events :) Especially the headless cat

Liz 14 months ago

Ok me and the choir group I went in went today on 12-11-10 and one of the girls had told us about the house being haunted. One of my friend came to me twice after we performed that she had heard the headless orange cat twice in the dinning room. I went with her after we performed for like the fourth time, and when we was in there I heard a cat meow in the left corner of the Christmas tree. Then me and my friend asked an employee if the house was haunted, well I don't know if she realy gave a yes or a no, but she said one of her local employers had vibes in the room, she said that she would come down and have a grin on her face, and she would ask what she was smiling about, and the lady would say " that's a happy room" then she would ask about other rooms and her friend would tell if their happy, sad, or mad.(strang)

then me and my friend went to thf library. And we heard Edeth's laugh, at first I thought it was just some in the room, but then I realized it was realy faint as if it was in the part of the library that your not aloud at.

Then me and my friend went to the 3rd floor, and heard a laugh again in a room, but I don't know which room is was though.

Thdn when we had to go back down stairs I talked to the girl who told us about the house being haunted, and she said she heard like a person humming at tune, then she said she heard a little girl dribbling a ball.

Then when we was leaving I was outside walking to the bus to leave with a different friend, and on the fourth floor i'am positve I saw a face in the window, at first I thought it was a person that was touring, then I realized no one was aloud on the fourth floor, but after I looked I looked away, then when j thought I seen a face I looked back and there wasn't a face, and I would keep glancing up at the window to see if I would see it again, but finaly I stopped after my friend said I was going trip over the sidewalk.

Also like everyone else has experienced I also felt the vibe as if I was not wanted there and I was needing to leave.

Ana -NSMS (school i went with) 14 months ago

So, this is just me, but i went when i was in 6th grade with the school (im in 8th grade now) it was my second time & my mom had mentioned it was haunted and she wanted to know if i saw anything paranormal. So when i walked in all the fireplaces were on. so naturally, it was hot as hell! we took forever on the first floor. but we took a right and went through the first room, when we entered the 2nd room on the right there was a door, you couldn't really walk out it though or you would fall a few feet to the ground (:P) but it was locked, and closed securely. when my group walked past it it suddenly flung open. & when we went to the halloween room it cold cold as ice, which immediately felt i should go. but when we got to the furnaces it was super cold and i felt like someone was pushing me through.

ALSO, the bowling alley, it felt like the statues were following my every move.

The big spiral staircase freaked me out the most. When i was 4 i fell down 2 flights of stairs, and ive been uneasy about stairs ever since. but when we went down the spiral stairscase i felt like i was being pushed down them while being pulled aswell.

Summer of 2010 I went to the Biltmore house when we were walking I went ahead and passed the kitchen and I stood staring at it for a moment and realized there was a girl in there. She looked about 2 or 3 she was real tiny, and as I continued walking down the hall I was about to go upstairs when, I heard someone clearly say Cassidy! I ran around looking for someone but ended up at a dead end. I found a staff member who asked me if I was alright because I was really pale. I told her what happend and she told me that their had once been a lady on the biltmore land and her two kids and husband died of yellow fever and died. So she later shot herself.

My mom & I visited on 1/15/11 for my birthday. I had never been. We are both "amateur" ghost hunters and we are both very sensitive to spirits and spiritual hauntings. As a child, I believe I actually saw some spirits. We took the basic, self-guided tour and wandered the grounds, etc. While we were waiting for the Wine Tour to begin, we were talking about different things throughout the day and my mom asked me if I had sensed anything in the house. I told her I had been in the hallway (not sure which one - gray carpet and burgundy walls) and had felt like I was being watched and had sensed a woman and a child. I had also had an uneasiness when we were in the basement in the main kitchen. When I mentioned the hall, she said she had the same sensation. Eager to return and take the other tours and be more aware to what may be there.

My daughter took me to Biltmore Mansion for Mothers Day 2008, we had a great time walking back in time. Ever since I was a child I have always felt there was something around me at different times and on occasion have seen things move and been touched by an unseen hand. So it didn't surprise me that I felt unseen eyes watching me as I moved through the estate, I guess you could say I was expecting something to happen on my visit.

I remember walking down the first hallway that had pictures on both sides of me and was stealthily taking a few photos before some busybody ratted me out! I did get a few though and the whole way through I could feel something behind my right shoulder, it could have breathed in my ear if it had wanted to, but it was just watching me fiddle with my camera. Mr. Vanderbilt's library, bedroom and bathroom were areas that I could feel a presence as well as through the connecting rooms to Mrs. Vanderbilt's room. I never felt afraid really just a slight level of sadness, it's as though they cherished their home and all the happy memories they had there so much that they don't want to leave. My advice to anyone that goes to visit is to say hello to the Vanderbilt's when you enter, tell them that you just wanted to come and see their wonderful home and that you promise to be kind and respectful of the property. No one has to hear you just say it under your breath and go on with your day. And as for the servants area, oh yes, they are still there, they are keeping an eye on things and make sure everything stays in order!

Once when i went i was going down into the basement and something pushed me to the landing. I thought it was my sister but she was all the way at the top. Then going down the stairs near the pool i was pushed to the small landing. Again i thought it to be my sister but she was looking in the pool near to the door. Anyone else have this happen to them?

I have worked at the Winery on the Estate, and closing up at nights is quite chilling as well. Guests and staff have all heard voices in parts of the building that were originally from the dairy structure. This is especially true for the tunnels under the whole building. One story is that the son of one of the farmhands was crushed by a cart in that underground tunnel system, and he moves around at night.

I have visited the house several times and have stayed at the Inn on the grounds, and although I am a believer in the paranormal, I have yet to experience any events whatsoever. Although I can understand that when the tourists are gone and the house is closed for the night, it returns back to itself, and not someplace where I would want to be alone.

During the mid 90s I went to the Biltmore Estate with a friend and found myself overwhelmed with the grandour and size of the Estate and house. But what has stayed with me the most all these years were two experiences I had that day.

We were taking the typical "tourist tour" of the house when we were asked to climb the stairs for the North Tower. About halfway up these stairs I began to have trouble breathing and I felt my neck get very tight. This became so bad that when we reached the top I had to stop for several minutes to catch my breath and feel "normal" again. My friend asked our guide if anything had ever happened on those stairs. She matter of factly that "Yes, a maid had tripped and fallen, breaking her neck and died on those stairs"! You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that!

Then, a bit later, we were in the Halloween Room. While studying the many paintings in that room I began to hear flute music. It was very clear and to this day if I close my eyes and focus on the memory I can still hear it. I wondered if there were any bands or reenactors in the area and our guide assured me that there were not. I believe I picked up on a long ago party that is still happening.

I must note here that I have always considered myself to be on the sensitive side, but this was the first time I had felt/heard these kind of things so strongly! I hope one day to be able to go back and see if it happens again or perhaps something new might pop up!

I would like to say that i have worked there for 4 months and i have never experenced anything. It is a beautiful home and a fantastic place to work. I see something new every night.I personaly think that it would have been great to have been one of their friends backthen and had the opertunity to stay over night in the house........And bt the way if you look at something long enough you will thinksomethingis happing.... I"m not sayingthat there are not spirits there but i have yet to see one for myself..Though i thinkit would be a memoriable experance to feel that from someone that was in the house.id like tomeet the servants and Edith.. If i do i will let you know.......

Years ago I searched for information about paranormal experiences at the Biltmore, and none were to be found. Apparently they don't want such to be discussed, which is silly given the economic boost that haunted establishments enjoy from paranormal tourism, these days.

I was there about 25 years ago as a teen and had an experience that was unnerving. I recall being suddenly and very uneasy in the bowling alley, but in the swimming pool I saw an African American woman dressed in black with a dusty energy field around her. She was very distraught, and I felt that she died there. She spoke to me but it creeped me out and I turned away.

I've never been back but would love to get a feel for the place again.

My husband and I were at the Biltmore on 10/13/11. We were in the lower level near the laundry area. I looked out one of the windows and up on the balcony was a man with a moustache and jacket and a young women with blond short hair. Both looked like mannequinns and frozen in time. They were smiling and seemed very happy. I called for my husband to look and they were gone.

Went there today and felt three different experiences in three different areas. This includes a comforting hand on my shoulder after a particularly discomforting experience. It felt strong. I aske my mother who had been there before if someone had died in the house, probably male in a position of high authority. She then answered yes and told me about how George died and asked how I happened to know. E-mail me at Bapro1221@aol.com if you would like to know more.
